Board of Charles County Commissioners

Charles County is governed by a board of five County Commissioners who are elected at-large to four-year terms. The Charles County Commissioners have a number of responsibilities that include but are not limited to: raising revenues to fund the capital and operating budgets of County departments and agencies; providing for the public health, safety, and welfare of County residents; adopting and updating the Land Use Plan and Zoning Ordinance and overseeing the development process; and establishing, promulgating, and enforcing County rules, regulations, ordinances, policies, and procedures.

Department of Planning and Growth Management

The Department of Planning and Growth Management, also known as the Planning Division, prepares and maintains Comprehensive Plans, sub area plans, redevelopment plans, and special purpose studies. The division also implements these plans through the administration of local land development regulations such as the zoning and subdivision codes, while also enforcing state and local laws protecting natural resources.

Department of Public Works

The Department of Public Works exists to serve residents of Charles County with responsive, efficient, and effective delivery of services. The Department provides front line services to citizens through our road maintenance system, water and sewer system, parks and grounds, environmental resources – landfill and recycling, buildings and trades, technical support, vehicle maintenance, and inventory control.
