Metrorail to Centreville

Jurisdiction:
Virginia
Cost:
$1.13 billion
Project Description:

Northern Virginia's long-range vision plan, TransAction 2040, calls for the Orange Line to be extended west approximately 11 miles along the I-66/U.S. 29/U.S. 50 Corridor from Vienna to Centreville.  Some leaders in Northern Virginia have called for this project to go even farther west, to Gainesville or Haymarket in Prince William.  In 2013, Congressmen Gerry Connolly and Jim Moran introduced federal legislation to fund a study of this project along with the possibility of extending the Blue Line to Potomac Mills.

The Comprehensive Plans for both Fairfax and Prince William counties identify the need to develop alternative transit concepts, including an extension of existing Metrorail lines. The long-range plans of both WMATA and VDRPT have called for expanded transit options along this corridor.
