Northern Virginia's long-range transportation plan, TransAction 2040, includes a 14-mile extension of the Blue Line from Springfield to Potomac Mills. Demand for such a project is largely driven by growth along the I-95/U.S. 1 Corridor, including the shift of thousands of defense-related jobs to Fort Belvoir and the Engineering Proving Ground.
The Comprehensive Plans for both Fairfax and Prince William counties identify the need to develop alternative transit concepts, including an extension of the existing Metrorail lines. In 2013, Congressmen Gerry Connolly and Jim Moran introduced legislation to fund studies of potential Metrorail extensions along the I-95/U.S. 1 Corridor and the I-66 Corridor (see Rail to Centreville).
